REALTOR® Safety Alert

Realcomp recently received reports of a prospective client contacting multiple real estate professionals and exhibiting behavior that raised safety concerns.

The reported behavior included:

  • Requesting that a REALTOR® meet alone at a vacant property.
  • Discouraging the involvement of another agent or colleague.
  • Making personal comments unrelated to the real estate transaction.
  • Providing inconsistent information during conversations.
  • Contacting multiple agents with similar requests.

While each situation is unique, these reports serve as an important reminder for all real estate professionals to remain vigilant and follow established safety practices when working with new prospects.

Safety Reminders

  • Meet new clients in a public place or your office whenever possible.
  • Inform a colleague, broker, or family member of your appointment details.
  • Consider bringing another agent or team member to initial meetings.
  • Verify client identity and property information before scheduling appointments.
  • Trust your instincts. If a situation feels uncomfortable, end the conversation or decline the appointment.
  • Take advantage of available safety resources and screening tools, including criminal background checks through domii and your brokerage's safety procedures.

The safety of our subscribers remains a top priority. Please remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to your broker and appropriate authorities when warranted.
