More on MLS Consolidation

As you might imagine, during this year’s NAR Mid-Year meetings in Washington D.C., “MLS Consolidation” reigned as THE topic of discussion in many circles. As such, Realcomp continues to focus our time and energy on ways by which we can deliver more MLS data to you. We have persisted in our talks with neighboring boards, associations, and MLSs in an effort to achieve the goal of true consolidation.

During these talks, I have received many questions about Realcomp’s business structure. I would like to share some of these with you so you are aware of the questions, answers, and perceived “stumbling blocks” that exist as we strive to make headway in this area.

Q. What is to stop Realcomp from doubling our MLS fees once surrounding Boards/Associations join Realcomp as Shareholders?

A. The Realcomp Board of Governors is responsible for setting Realcomp’s MLS fees. The Board is comprised of brokers and agents who are just like you. Why would they make a decision to affect themselves, their agents, and other MLS Subscribers in such a drastic and negative way – especially in today’s economically challenging times? It certainly would not be a wise business decision. Additionally, I must note that your Realcomp Board of Governors have not raised MLS fees in over seven (7) years. Together, we work very hard to grow the MLS subscriber base (as possible), grow services, and maintain MLS fees. We have been successful in doing so thus far, and only hope to continue this trend in the future.

Q. Does Realcomp plan to open satellite offices in other areas?

A. Realcomp offers training at off-site locations as necessary in order to accommodate our MLS Subscribers. We have not yet had a need to open and financially support and maintain satellite offices. Renting training facilities on an as-needed basis in various locals throughout Southeast Michigan has proven to be a successful and economically feasible option for us, which has allowed us to serve our REALTOR® customers well while keeping expenses to a minimum.

Q. How does someone become a member of the Board of Governors?

A. If you are interested in serving on Realcomp’s Board of Governors, please contact your local Board/Association of REALTORS®. Each of our shareholders is responsible for electing/selecting two (2) representatives and one (1) alternate to serve on the Realcomp Board. The Executive Officer of your Board/Association can talk to you more about the current requirements and obligations.

Q. Has there ever been a Shareholder Board that has chosen to pull out of Realcomp?

A. We have not had a Board/Association join as a shareholder and later decide to pull out of Realcomp. Additionally, we hope that never happens. We value our Shareholder Boards/Associations and the services they provide to our REALTOR® members. Realcomp is committed to keeping the lines of communication open with our owners so our positive relations only continue to develop.

These are just a few of the questions that I have received. Do you have questions as well? Please let me know what they are. You can reach me by email at kkage@corp.realcomp.com or by phone at (248) 699.9120.
