Straight Talk - August 2007
This month, I would like to update you on Realcomp’s continued efforts to grow your access to MLS data across the state through additional data sharing partnerships with outside MLSs, including those most likely to be of mutual benefit.
In June, Realcomp requested a meeting with MiRealSource to discuss the possibility of resuming a reciprocal data exchange. Of course, the reciprocal data exchange would enable members of either MLS to subscribe to the service of their choice, access data for both MLSs, and avoid paying double MLS fees.
According to the response we received from MiRealSource, they are not in favor of resuming a reciprocal data exchange. Below is a copy of the response from Realcomp’s President, Doug Hardy to David DeRees, President of MiRealSource:
Based on the considerations and parameters outlined in your letter, we have surmised that you have rejected the idea of a “reciprocal data exchange” – a service that would surely be in the best interests of our members. Such an arrangement would provide them with the option of being able to use the MLS of their choice, rather than paying double dues (as present).
We are also unable to appreciate any legal argument against data sharing, as data sharing has no bearing on any of the legal issues Realcomp currently faces. Regarding the FTC, I understand your position may be different from ours, as we elected to reject the FTC’s consent order in an effort to preserve the purpose of the MLS and promote a guarantee of compensation between our REALTOR® members.
We understand that both of our MLS organizations would need to put forth significant effort to implement a successful reciprocal data exchange. We believe any efforts related to this initiative would be more than worthwhile doing for the benefit of our members.
In summary, we would welcome a meeting with you, at any time. Should you change your mind and be willing to discuss mutual goals for serving our members’ best interests by providing more comprehensive services for a reduced cost, we stand immediately available to resume data sharing with you, as we do currently with numerous other MLSs in the state.
Realcomp continues to explore ways to bring you more MLS data without additional fees, and continues to consider mutually beneficial partnerships. Realcomp has again offered to share data with other REALTOR® Boards and Associations across the state and has received interest from two (2) more MLS entities. As developments occur with these two (2) potential partners, we will be sure to keep you updated of the progress.
We understand Michigan’s economy has presented many of our REALTOR® members with financial difficulties and challenges. We hope to help by doing what we can to reduce or eliminate these burdens when possible.
Realcomp is pleased to continue offering our members data sharing with seven (7) other MLSs including; Ann Arbor Area Board of REALTORS®, Down River Association of REALTORS®, Flint Area Association of REALTORS®, Jackson Area Association of REALTORS®, Lapeer and Upper Thumb Association of REALTORS®, Lenawee County Association of REALTORS®, and Monroe County Association of REALTORS®.
On behalf of Realcomp’s Board of Governors and Shareholders, I would like to express our thanks in your continued support of Realcomp. I can be reached by email at
kkage@corp.realcomp.com or by phone at 248.699.9120.
